Pieter's already got the island spirit on day 2, coming out of our night mooring at Marina Cay.
bvi2005bl - 5
Ross keeps watch on the port pontoon.
bvi2005bl - 3
Stephen just got splashed on the starboard pontoon! Ariana and Allison are staying drier amidships.
bvi2005bl - 2
Pieter and Stephen. The sun was so wonderful.
bvi2005bl - 9
Kathy at the helm. Pete hardens up the jib while Andrea and Jessica soak up rays.
bvi2005bl - 7
Main and jib are reefed. Wind was gusting up to 30 knots.
bvi2005bl - 6
The Baths on Virgin Gorda
bvi2005al - 3
The Baths on Virgin Gorda (they are so photogenic!)
bvi2005al - 6
More of The Baths.
bvi2005al - 8
Palm trees, sandy beaches, big rocks to climb. What more could you ask for??
bvi2005al - 9
Ariana's pretty happy about things!
bvi2005bl - 11
Kathy tends the jib
bvi2005pd - 5
Ben drives the Winnebago while Kathy tails.
bvi2005pd - 6
Double rainbow after a tropical shower. We're in the Atlantic above the Sir Francis Drake Channel, and seas are a little rough.
bvi2005al - 13
The game of six-person Asshole is born, accompanied by the almighty Cheezball! Andrea, Stephen, Ross.
bvi2005bl - 15
Allison plots, while Andrea shows us her poker face. Did Stephen swallow a Cheezball the wrong way??
bvi2005bl - 17
Pete and Kathy.
bvi2005bl - 27
Jessica's feeling pretty good, too!
bvi2005bl - 29
Banane flambe a la Pieter. Stephen sure has his eye on it!
bvi2005bl - 30
Very spacious galley on this catamaran; table seats all 9 of us comfortably. Allison, Ariana, Andrea, Stephen, and Kathy eat breakfast.
bvi2005bl - 40
Ariana and Stephen have their "morning faces" on; Jessica's hair got bigger each day from the humidity ;-)
bvi2005bl - 41
Electrical panel; improvised "glove box". On the cat, we didn't have to stow things so carefully before sailing. The dark area to the bottom left is the pontoon: two and a half cabins and two heads each side!
bvi2005bl - 42
Pete needs his morning coffee; Ross looks suspiciously at his yogurt.
bvi2005bl - 43
View from inside the galley; another beautiful morning in The Bight at Norman Island.
bvi2005bl - 45
Inside the galley through the sliding glass door (!), we see the edge of the cockpit.
bvi2005bl - 46
Ben pumps the boys' head furiously trying to get a flow. The forward heads were both problematic for much of the trip.
bvi2005pd - 1
Beautiful three-master anchored near us in The Bight. Beyond, Pelican Rock and the Indians.
bvi2005bl - 36
Close-up of the three-master.
bvi2005bl - 47
Our catamaran was named the Dolly Grace, but we called her the Black Durgon, after a cool-looking fish. Here we are at the Indians, just about to snorkel.
bvi2005bl - 48
Sunbathing on the trampoline was a very popular activity. Here's Andrea, Ross, and Stephen.
bvi2005bl - 51
Kathy shows Pete a picture of the Spotted Drum she had just seen while snorkeling.
bvi2005bl - 55
Andrea and Stephen are framed by the galley portholes. Stephen is in the process of getting his face sunburned.
bvi2005bl - 59
Pete and Jessica off for a snorkel. This time, the area right around our mooring in The Bight was the best snorkeling ground of the trip!
bvi2005bl - 60
Pelican Rock and the Indians, with Tortola in the background.
bvi2005bl - 61
Okay, now they're finally ready to hit the water!
bvi2005bl - 65
Our cat from the water. Not sure who the bathing beauty in the trampoline is...
bvi2005bl - 71
Wet suits hanging out to dry. We had 2 swim platforms, but only one surviving swim ladder.
bvi2005bl - 74
Ross with innovative new "'do".
bvi2005bl - 77
Ariana showing the drink of choice on this trip: water! We went through far fewer sodas on this trip than ever before.
bvi2005bl - 79
I love this shot of Allison!
bvi2005bl - 80
Stephen is also up on the latest fashions. And here you can see the result of falling asleep in the sun!
bvi2005bl - 81
A definite art shot -- note the reflection!
bvi2005bl - 83
Andrea does a pretty good Julia Roberts imitation!
bvi2005bl - 84
Andrea and Allison
bvi2005pd - 9
Texture of the greenery on Norman Island; makes one want to stroke it.
bvi2005al - 23
More Norman Island greenery. The best snorkeling lies just below the surface of this water...
bvi2005al - 25
Ben with the trip's most coveted hat! The scuba shirt is sexy, too...
bvi2005al - 34
Passing the caves at Treasure Point on Norman Island. These caves inspired R.L. Stevenson's "Treasure Island". Great snorkeling.
bvi2005bl - 86
Pete in great shape...
bvi2005al - 38
Looking back into The Bight.
bvi2005bl - 88
Photogs, get your cameras!
bvi2005bl - 90
Port pontoon makes a nice geometrical shape...
bvi2005al - 39
Money Bay on the Atlantic side of Norman is a new day anchorage for us. Here we saw sand dollars, a live conch, a dead conch shell containing a HUGE hermit crab, a whole squidron of squid, a lot of black durgon...
bvi2005al - 51
Ben prepares to check the anchor at Money Bay
bvi2005pd - 16
Waiting for the disappearing dinghy... See that huge breaker? Pete and Allison went down there to see if the snorkeling was worthwhile.
bvi2005al - 58
Pete tests the mast hoist at Money Bay
bvi2005pd - 17
Pete dominates Money Bay
bvi2005pd - 20
Jessica is terribly impressed with Pete's height. She eventually also allows herself to be hoised up the mast.
bvi2005pd - 22
Still Life #1 in Money Bay
bvi2005pd - 27
Still Life #2: Cheezball In Money Bay
bvi2005pd - 28
Kathy loves to drive.
bvi2005al - 64
Line 'em up: Stephen, Ross, Andrea, Allison hold on in the open Atlantic, and watch for flying fish.
bvi2005bl - 93
One potato, two potato, three potato, four, on the shroud.
bvi2005bl - 97
Disciples of the Shroud with their Master Pieter. Pete told us afterwards that he was telling the short versions of the stories because he was afraid of boring them!!
bvi2005bl - 100
Kathy has a new convert to the joys of the helm! Allison was a natural. Stephen also picked it up very quickly.
bvi2005bl - 103
Allison has the upwind tacks perfectly mastered. She made 11.2 knots, the highest speed of the trip, in the open Atlantic!
bvi2005bl - 104
Fair-skinned Allison DID NOT BURN on our trip! She was awesome!
bvi2005bl - 107
Ross and Andrea at the shroud.
bvi2005bl - 110
Pete tries to spot a mooring in Manchioneel Bay with the binoculars.
bvi2005bl - 113
Manchioneel Bay, Cooper Island. Or, to put it another way, paradise.
bvi2005al - 65
Another view of paradise.
bvi2005bl - 114
Those coconut palms...
bvi2005pd - 29
The Dolly Grace -- I mean, the Black Durgon -- is the farther cat. The tree on the right is a sea-grape tree.
bvi2005bl - 124
More palms.
bvi2005pd - 33
Seagrapes
bvi2005pd - 36
Stephen climbs a coconut palm.
bvi2005al - 69
Ross catches the coconut Stephen throws down.
bvi2005al - 67
Andrea is the beneficiary of all the coconuts!
bvi2005al - 72
Ariana runs to tell me not to take her picture!
bvi2005bl - 130
Actually, we are all the beneficiaries of the coconuts. A helpful man grabs his machete to lop off the tops of the coconuts so we can drink the milk.
bvi2005bl - 131
Ross and Stephen applaud the machete-wielding, and wish they too had machetes.
bvi2005bl - 132
But they'll settle for some coconut milk.
bvi2005bl - 133
Pete partakes. Andrea was the big consumer, though. She enjoyed them so much.
bvi2005bl - 136

bvi2005pd - 40

bvi2005pd - 51
Back: Jessica, Pieter, Andrea Stephen, Allison. Front: Kathy, Ross, Ariana. Ben is taking the shot, alas!
bvi2005bl - 139
A fabulous sunset at Manchioneel Bay. Two Moorings monohulls.
bvi2005al - 73
More sunset.
bvi2005al - 76
We saved a coconut so we could add rum to the milk, back on board. Stephen and Ross sample.
bvi2005al - 78
Jessica makes us all happy with a terrific spaghetti dinner.
bvi2005al - 79
Don't talk back to the cook!
bvi2005al - 80
Leaving Manchioneel Bay. That's Beef Island across the channel (where the airport is).
bvi2005bl - 144
Stephen and Andrea have already hit the shroud. I like the reflection of Ariana in the sliding glass door.
bvi2005bl - 145
Kathy at the helm again, doing 8.5 kts.
bvi2005bl - 147
Check out this schooner!
bvi2005bl - 149
We're at The Baths again, preparing to send people up the mast. Ross goes first today.
bvi2005al - 89
Halfway up to the first spreader...
bvi2005al - 92
Getting around the first spreader...
bvi2005al - 93
On top of the spreader, ready to take photos!
bvi2005al - 95
Stephen's hair is truly awesome.
bvi2005al - 96
Main entrance to The Baths. Very popular site. We didn't bother with the dinghy, but snorkeled in.
bvi2005bl - 150
Jessica enjoys a quiet moment on the trampoline.
bvi2005al - 97
Ross's shot from up the mast: Kathy, Ariana, Allison, Stephen, Andrea, Jessica, Ben, and Pete. One happy crew!
bvi2005bl - 153
Making the sign of the Omnipotent Cheezball! In the background, Pete belays as Ben hoists Ross up the mast.
bvi2005al - 99
Love the color of the water.
bvi2005al - 104
Stephen goes up the mast; Ross is hoisting as Pete belays.
bvi2005al - 106
Left hand on the stay, left foot on the mast, right foot in the stirrup Pete made, and a rope indentation on the butt!
bvi2005al - 107
Still going up
bvi2005bl - 154
Getting over the spreader...
bvi2005bl - 157
Made it!
bvi2005al - 110
Ross cranks, Pete belays, and Andrea provides commentary?
bvi2005bl - 158
Yup, really made it!
bvi2005bl - 161
Allison looking good...
bvi2005bl - 162
The hat's the thing. Ben poses as Pete belays.
bvi2005bl - 163
Ariana goes up too.
bvi2005bl - 164
That one strand of hair makes me think of Lara Croft Tomb Raider...
bvi2005bl - 165
Ariana's on the first spreader!
bvi2005bl - 169
Ariana takes a beautiful picture of The Baths from up the mast.
bvi2005al - 113
From the mast: the color of the water draws us in.
bvi2005al - 115
The happy mast climber shares a smile with us.
bvi2005bl - 170
