The last ride was through the mountains. Three peaks, the middle one 900 meters (about 300ft), and 99km long. John told us that none of the Freewheeling tour members has ever completed the whole thing without a lift. Tom rose to the challenge and set out at a rapid pace, leaving the rest of us behind after the first peak. He discovered, however, that the trip-tik was not particularly detailed or accurate toward the end of the ride (nobody had made it that far!), so he missed the turnoff for the hotel and ended up nearly in Florence. Given that it was a 5km hill back to the hotel, John gave him a lift back. Ben and Kathy rode the red sections on bikes, blue in the van. We believed the GPS so got to the hotel without wrong turns; score another for technology!
